John Valentine said the point-to-point Run For Dad 5K course in Fort Worth didn't seem to be that much of a downhill trek. However, when he finished the race, his dash down the 3.1-mile course earned him a personal-best time of 16:08 and the overall male title. While the course might not seem downhill, there is a significant elevation drop from the start at Sanguinet Park to inside Trinity Park at Pavilion #3. Valentine, 17, darted out to a big lead in the first mile and left Ken Hall, a 45-year-old masters runner from Colleyville in a chase mode. ``I closed the gap quite a bit, but I didn't have enough to catch him,'' said Hall, who finished in 16:12.9. Another masters runner dashed to the women's overall title as Laura Nelson, 43, of Grapevine ran a 19:47.5. Maria Martinez, 33, of Fort Worth finished second in 20:01.9, two seconds in front of Angela Eusery, 41, of Grand Prairie. Eusery took the women's masters title. While the winners have been participants at several area road races, Nelson is a relative newcomer. She moved to the D-FW area two years ago from Virginia and, after 25 years of running, said she loves the sport. She didn't begin running until college in Maryland, and that was to lose weight. ``I liked it, so I continued.'' She runs practically all distances and is training for the 50K at the El Scorcho on July 19 at Trinity Park. ``I really like Texas. This is my favorite place of all (the places she's lived).''
